2024 Ark fjordur ape boss

Is there a time limit on killing the Island Bosses? I was killing the ape boss with a single dino, and was taking a long time at it. I got him down to about 20%, when he simply vanished. A few seconds later I got the 60 second exit warning, and did not get credit for killing him. I can only assume there is either a time limit, or I experienced some odd glitch..... Does anyone know?.
